Artist Bio
Born in 1994, Ekene Stanley Emecheta is a self-taught Nigerian artist currently based in London and Nigeria. With a diverse background, he has also had the enriching experience of teaching art in China for five months. Ekene’s artistic practice primarily revolves around figurative works rendered in oil and acrylic on canvas. His recent focus delves into themes of human energy, personality, and identity, using a unique technique of painting white over the bodies of his figures to create a soulful appearance. This approach intentionally excludes the materiality of skin color, encouraging viewers to connect with the deeper essence of the subjects.
Ekene’s solo exhibition, “Truthful Waters,” hosted at The Breeder in Athens during the summer of 2021, received notable recognition and was reviewed by Frieze Magazine. His works have been collected by prestigious institutions, including the X Museum in Beijing, the Xiao Museum in Rizhao, China, the Akzo Nobel Foundation in the Netherlands, the Comma Foundation in Belgium, and the Up Next Art Museum in Puerto Rico.
Through his art, Ekene invites viewers to explore the complexities of identity and the shared human experience, fostering a dialogue that transcends cultural boundaries.
